I have a 1971 351 Cleveland 4-V, and was hoping I could get some information on exactly what I have. There's some confusion about the Autolite carburetor. The part no is "D1OFAAA". One site mentioned that the "F" is for "General parts, Electrical and Electronic" -- shouldn't it rather have the "E" code for "Engine Group"? The carburetor also has a "AAA" suffix - what would these represent? Lastly, my biggest question: there were three 4-V 351 Cleveland engines made in 1971 (the CobraJet, Boss and another without a nickname), which is mine? I read the Boss 351 has 4-bolt mains - mine doesn't (which I guess would guarantee it's not a Boss...?). That leaves the CobraJet. I found this site: Cleveland -- The Ford V-8 Engine Workshop, which gives part numbers for cylinder heads. My "D1AE GA" heads are listed as the one without the nickname, though no part numbers are listed for the CobraJet. What are the 1971 CJ cylinder head numbers and is "D1AE GA" one of them?

I've tried to decode as much as I could myself, but here's the codes on my engine:

BLOCK
Part No: D0AE-L (1970 Generic full-size Ford, 12th eng. version)
Date: 1E5 (May 5, 1971)
Main caps: 2-bolt

INTAKE MANIFOLD
Part No: D0AE-9425-L (1970 Generic full-size Ford, 12th eng. version)
Date: 1A5 (January 5th, 1971)

CARBURETOR
Make: Autolite
Part No: D1OFAAA (1971 Fairlane & Torino '67-'76, not sure how to decode "AAA")
Date: 1B10 (February 10th, 1971)

Thanks for any help you can provide!

What you have is a 1971 "M" code 351-4V, rate at 285hp. The M code had @ 10.5~11:1 compression. The Q-code CJ engine had 9:1 or so and a much better cam.

If you're rebuilding for performance, it doesn't matter which one you start with, they are both excellent engines. The biggest problem with an M code was the station wagon-esque cam specs and the low rpm stall converter used on automatic cars. Both were fixed with the CJ.

The D1AE-GA heads differ from the Boss head only by the fact they have bolt down rockers, whereas the Boss heads had an adjustable setup with screw in studs and guideplates.

2-bolt, 4-bolt, it doesn't really matter. Throw a set of ARP studs or bolts in there and you're good to go.

The D1OF-AA carb is not shown in my MPC. I'll have to dig some more to come up with the original application.

BTW, there are a LOT of errors on the web page you posted, take it with a grain of salt.....

The pic like is a photo of the page from How to rebuild your Ford V8 by Tom Monroe. (his "big block" edition). The V8 workshop link has a ton of junk in it. Hemikiller has it covered - the AAA on the carb is just a revision or change level, not much meaning until you go to the books to look for a kit. Those heads sat around a long time before they made it to that block. Unusual I think.
